The Sishen Solar PV project is a 63 MW solar facility being developed within Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine, located 30 km from Kathu in the Northern Cape. Developed through Envusa Energy, the renewable energy partnership between EDF Power Solutions and Anglo American, the project will supply renewable electricity directly to mining operations at Sishen Mine.

Constructed on the rehabilitated G80 Waste Rock Dump, the project will transform previously disturbed mining land into productive renewable energy infrastructure. By connecting directly to the mine's internal electrical network, the facility will improve energy security, reduce transmission losses and support the decarbonisation of one of South Africa's largest mining operations.
Sishen is a 14km-long, open-cast mine with 13 active pits, owned and operated by Kumba Iron Ore, a subsidiary of Anglo American. It produces high-grade iron ore, with annual production regularly exceeding 25 million tonnes, and hosts It also hosts the world's largest dense media separation (DMS) jig plant. The waste-rock dump covers 100 hectares and reaches heights of more than 70 metres above natural ground level.
Once operational, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 144 GWh of renewable electricity annually, reducing the mine's carbon emissions by approximately 140,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The project forms an important part of Kumba Iron Ore's energy transition strategy and contributes to the broader sustainability ambitions of Anglo American.
The development includes innovative engineering solutions tailored to its unique location on a waste-rock dump, including a mobile adjustable substation designed to accommodate long-term ground settlement.
Alongside its environmental benefits, the project delivers long-term community value through the participation of the Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT), which holds a 10% equity stake in the project.
